Chiefs Upset the World Champions in Overtime!

So one game...does not a season make. But you have to like both the outcome and the process of getting it. In Sunday's victory over the Steelers, I noticed two things:

First the team's ability to persevere. Let's face it, the offensive scored nuttin' in the first half. And the ability for the special teams and specifically the defense to hold on while the offense found a way to get involved - well let's just say "progress."

Second, I thought the adjustments at halftime were effective. Similar to the Marty Schottenheimer days - when it seemed like 2 days of coaching took place in the 10 minute halftime. This was, IMHO, the most complete coaching effort we've seen from Todd Haley's administration. And congratulations to them on a great game plan. The preparation through the week allowed them to overcome injuries at key positions, hide their weaknesses, and consume the defending champions of pro-football on Sunday. And they did it with only 4 penalties. Smart!

The morning did start out a little disappointing. As I drove in the parking lot was almost solid black and gold. I felt like I was in a taxi on the road. But I guess its to be expected, after 14 months of not winning at home. But fans should remember what a factor the 12th man is (or at least was) at Arrowhead Stadium. We need to be a part of that again. And for those fans waiting for a more impressive football team to entertain them....well;

This week, the Chiefs were impressive!

Here is hoping that the team that played the Ravens and Steelers is the foundation of our next decade.

Have a great Thanksgiving everyone!

P.S. FOR THE RECORD. Chiefs without Larry Johnson: 2-0 Bengals with LJ: 0-1

I'm just sayin'....

Chiefs release Larry Johnson

This morning when I informed everyone in my office that LJ was being release, literal applause ensued. This is in part what makes growing up and raising kids in the mid-west special. Character still means something.

The cheers were not about football per se. Although Johnson has not been the back he once was, his lack of production on the field isn't what generated this level of emotion. This was about representing a city, and people who love it and live in it. For the most part, the Chiefs organization has always represented KC in a manner consistent with the traits of mid-west beliefs. One of tradition, sincerity, and hard work. An unselfish empathy.

LJ portrayed....we'll something different from that!

I love living in a city that won't accept "winning at all costs." I love working for an organization that values its heritage and honors its traditions. I'm grateful for Clark Hunt's respect of his fathers work. AND his way of doing it.

Professional sports is and always will be a haven for the physically talented. It's tough enough to rebuild a team. Its even tougher to rebuild it with character and integrity. And while I don't like losing either, today...I am proud to be a Chiefs fan!

Veteran's Day Game at Arrowhead

Since I'm not quite up for talking about the Chargers game or twits...I mean tweets, how about we talk about this:

Several years ago, while on the road for an away game, Mitch Holthus shared with me his vision to have a permanent national Veteran's Day Game at Arrowhead. Regardless of how you feel about yesterday's game, you have to admit, Military Appreciation day was awesome. When those helicopters flew over the stadium at the end of the anthem, I almost forgot to cue Mitch.

Whether you believe in making love not war, or hard-line foreign policies, as American in the 21st Century, we all recognize that the very freedoms we enjoy are not free! And that the sons and daughters that are empowered to be the enforcement of these freedoms deserve respect and praise. As do all that have gone before them. I can't think of a better idea than Kansas City representing the mainstream commonality of America than Mitch's Veteran's Day Game.

Take the bye week to write your Congressman. Write the league. Tell them KC wants to demonstrate a nation's pride to every individual that has given themselves to military service.

Special Teams Raid Chiefs

Hard to win a football game if you turn it over. And by now, we've all rehashed the final moments of the 1st half. So the W slipped through our fingers on a handful of mistakes. While, I'm not excusing ANY mistakes, today the Oakland Raiders demonstrated how good special teams can keep you in a game that your offense barely plays in.

The Chiefs defense had their work cut out for them today. And it wasn't because of the powerful running game of the Raiders. It is because the Raiders only play on half the field. If you get the ball near your opponent forty...Sebastian Janikowski is dangerous. But today, Shane Lechler put on a Pro Bowl demonstration of punting. His net average yards were impressive. The play of the entire special teams left the Raiders a chance to win this game at the last minute, and that is exactly what they did - practically on one play.

Enough about getting beat. It was encouraging to see the play of Bobby Wade, acquired this week off waivers. I thought both he and Dwayne Bowe were playing tough, especially across the middle (You know, the area of the field Tony Gonzalez used to play in). Speaking of Dwayne, I thought today it was evident that he is indeed maturing. Also playing better IMHO was Tank Tyler. And DJ ... that's two! And of course, the other Johnson, Larry was hitting the holes faster and running tougher. Last season he seemed to come down if someone thought about touching him...today - you had to hit him hard and low. But, man do I miss T-Rich. Imagine LJ behind a T-Rich lead.

One thing is for sure. True accountability in the clubhouse...or office place...makes a difference. We've seen it week after week from this coach. A player can't even get off the field without finding out the coach's feelings about his performance.

OFFESNSIVE COORDINATOR
While we’re on the subject...I liked Chan Gailey as a person. He was an extremely polite and pleasant person. But watching the new blocking schemes today in conjunction with the breadth of play calling (moving pockets, screens, etc.), I must say I think Todd Haley is a better O-Coordinator. Larry Johnson obviously has talent, and Todd seems to be finding a way to use it. Now let's see if he can dodge the freight training coming on the NFC East Railroad.

Scott Pioli becomes Chiefs GM

We interrupt this message…. Scott Pioli former Vice President of Player Personnel for the New England Patriots becomes General Manager for the Kansas City Chiefs!

IMHO, this is a home run from both Clark Hunt and Denny Thum. Certainly Pioli is the man with the greatest pedigree. He is a four time NFL Executive of the Year. He has three rings. His assistant, former Chiefs,Thomas Dimtroff was responsible for getting Atlanta back on track this year. And perhaps most important, is his ability to discern talent. Remember, Tom Brady was a 6th round pick. And Matt Cassel was a 7th rounder who was a backup in college behind two Heisman Trophy winners. But the single greatest benefit is just what Chiefs fans need most – HOPE!

Do I think Mr. Pioli success is given? Of course not, but I believe in Denny Thum’s ability to have and build synergy with the former Patriot. As with any manager, you live and die by those you pick to trust. And the Patriots synergy through this decade has certainly payed a fantasic dividend.

This is what Robert Kraft (owner of the Patriots) had to say about Mr. Pioli:
“Scott Pioli was an integral part of the many championships the New England Patriots have celebrated this decade and I would like to thank him for his countless contributions throughout the past nine seasons. Scott is a great evaluator of talent. He is thorough in his evaluations, extremely organized and has done a tremendous job mining all possible resources to help Coach Belichick and his staff field the players needed to win consistently. He has played an important role in building a championship tradition with players that I am proud to call Patriots. On behalf of the entire Patriots organization, I wish Scott continued success in his new role and offer best wishes to his wonderful wife Dallas, and their beautiful daughter Mia. I think Clark Hunt and the Kansas City Chiefs have made a very wise hire.”

Here's to 2009!

2008 NFL Playoffs - Divisional Weekend

This year's NFL playoffs might have reinforced two football axioms:
  1. Defenses win championships.
  2. That's why they play 'em!

Ironically, it seems to also be saying "Home-Field Advantage" is not necessarily so. In fact, this year home-field tag is synonymous with turnovers! Both number one seeds now at home playing Guitar Hero.

RAVENS at TITANS
My heart goes out to Tennessee and Titans fans everywhere. It brought back the pain of seasons gone by and the incredible disappointment at concluding 13-3 home field season in round one of the playoffs. And for those that think Ray Lewis is finished, did you see that snot-knocker? I think Ravens @ Steelers is going to be a good game.

CARDINALS at PANTHERS
Congratulations to Kurt Warner and the Cardinals. Is it me...or have they had THAT defense all year? On the other side, I can't think of a worse birthday present for a quarterback than Jake Delhomme's 0.0 passer rating. Zero point Zero...ugh! It would seem that the Eastern Time Zone didn't have near the vexing power that the media said it would.

(Ear muffs)

While we on this...Are you FREAKIN' kidding me? How could any intelligent human being make the argument that the Arizona Cardinals can't play in the Eastern Time Zone. Especially when it was a late game, not an early kick off. Media pros made this argument for a solid week. How could a sane individual suggest any team can't play in a certain time zone. Do airline pilots have trouble landing in cities whose name begin with vowels? Do mechanics have trouble working on cars painted blue? Is it possible a minister could preach on a day, other than Sunday? And certainly, NASCAR drivers can't go anywhere that requires turning right! What a ludicrous premise. This is a statistician out-of-control!

PARITY & NUMBER ONE SEED
The NFL continues to have parity among their teams. The number one seed and home crowd is no longer enough to make it happen. Nor is the coin-flip in overtime. Nor is the title of "World Champion!" Oringally, I thought it would be the Ravens vs. Giants. Since I have to reconsider, I'd like a day to think about those Steelers too!

2008 NFL Playoffs - Wildcard Weekend

Every year, I continue to believe that I have finally "seen it all" in the NFL. Yesterday I watched the Wildcard games with great anticipation. I've always believed that December's momentum was more powerful than a team's win/loss record. But it's hard to deny that a 12-4 should be able to handle an 8-8 team, regardless of momentum.

Personally, I don't like either GM. The Colts' Bill Polian makes my job very difficult when we play the colts at Indy. And I dislike the Chargers' A.J. Smith for the way he treated Marty. I do like, and a big congratulations to, KC native and K-State'r Darren Sproles. He rocks! And I love that his size not only hasn't limited him, but I think helps him. Proof that hard work can offset many dispositions, including physical ones.

Of course, on the NFC side, Arizona had as little momentum as you can take in to post season. Nevertheless, thier defense played extremely well...and Edgerrin James played like a Pro Bowler and former Colts stud. These two games just further reveal how much parity exists in the National Football League.

A wise friend once told me..."NEVER BET ON HUMAN BEINGS!"
